Highland Park, a town of only 2.3 square miles, is the richest suburb of Dallas. It’s a town of wealthy conservatives only a couple miles from the financial center of Dallas with one of the lowest property tax rates in Texas and no income tax. It is so exclusive and insular that it is called the “Bubble” by outsiders.

Highland Park sits at a higher elevation than the surrounding area, hence its name. When it was incorporated in 1913, it was mandated that 20 percent of it be reserved for park space. Today, there are 22 town-run parks in the hamlet of 8,900 people.

It’s proximity to Dallas airports – it’s two miles from Love Field and 30 minutes from Dallas-Fort Worth International – make it a desirable location for wealthy businessmen, retirees and those who own or charter private jets.

Nature bursts onto the scene in the spring when the thousands of azaleas planted by the town bloom. In addition to the parks, the town has eight tennis courts, three playgrounds and a public pool.

At Christmas time, the annual tree lighting is of The Big Pecan Tree on Armstrong Way. The tradition, which was started by a local realty company in 1927, continues to this day. The tree is now 140 years old and more than 75 feet tall and wide.

Highland Park homes are priced in the double-digit millions. Wealthy current and former residents include billionaire Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys; George and Laura Bush; Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban; Dick Cheney; developer Harlan Crow, who has a 77-car underground parking garage in his $24 million mansions; and billionaire oilman Ed Cox. John Muse, financier, and seller of cowboy boots who lives in a $50 million mansion. Other big Republican donors include the H.L. Hunt oil family; the children of Ross Perot; and billionaire Robert Rowling, who owns the Gold’s Gym and Omni Hotel chains. Jayne Mansfield and Angie Harmon went to Highland Park High School. The town’s most infamous resident was John Hinckley Jr., who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
