How Much Does it Cost to Rent a Private Jet?

The cost to rent a private jet varies from $2,000 - $14,000 per billable flight hour. These hourly rates include a broad selection of aircraft from turboprops to the finest executive jets in the sky. In addition to the hourly rental rates, which include aircraft, crew, insurance, and fuel, several other factors contribute to the overall price of renting a private jet. 

The most economical private jets - Turboprops, Very Light Jets, or Executive Light Jets - cost around $2,600 to $3,500 per flight hour. Midsize or Super Midsize Jets cost between $4,000 and $8,000 per hour. Large and Ultra Long Range Jets cost between $8,000 and $14,000 per hour within the US, and possibly higher internationally.

Ultra-luxury VIP Airliners such as the Lineage 1000, BBJs, and ACJs in executive configurations cost anywhere from $16,000 to 23,000 per billable flight hour.

  • Private Jet Rental Price Factors

    Billable Flight Time

    Billable flight time, calculated on an hourly basis, is the primary cost driver when renting a private jet. It includes positioning time, airborne time, and the standard two hours per day minimum charge, when applicable. Billable flight time refers to wheels up to wheels down and does not include taxi time.

    Aircraft Category

    Aircraft categories classify private jets based on their size and capabilities. The cost of hiring a private jet increases with its category. Private jet rental rates start at $2,000 per hour for Turbo Props, reach up to $14,000 for Ultra-Long-Range Jets, and exceed $23,000 for VIP Airliners. 

    Aircraft Type

    There are a variety of aircraft types within each category of private jets. Some aircraft types are slightly more expensive than others based on their comfort level, performance, and market demand. You can expect price variations from $200 to $2,000 per hour or more.

    Age of Aircraft

    The hourly rental rate of a newer aircraft is higher per hour than an older plane. Prices can vary from $100 to $1,000 per hour or more.

  • Government Taxes and Fees

    Federal Excise Tax

    Federal Excise Tax is charged for all US domestic flight legs at a rate of 7.5%. FET is charged on any amount paid for air transportation. Learn how to calculate taxes on flights in the United States.

    US Segment Fees

    Segment fees are a government tax calculated per passenger and vary by region. In 2024 the US segment fee is $5.00 per passenger, per leg.

    International Fees

    Depending on the event and the region, the international fees can cost anywhere from $500 to $5,000 or more. They include landing permits, overflight permits, customs, and immigration fees whenever required by your route of flight and the country of your arrival.

    International Head Tax

    International Head Tax in 2024 is $22.20 per passenger for any international flight leg that begins or ends in the US.  

    Alaska/Hawaii Head Tax

    Alaska and Hawaii Head Tax in 2024 is $11.10 per passenger and applies to departures from Alaska/Hawaii for domestic segments 

    Italian Luxury Tax

    Italian Luxury Tax is charged when flying in or out of Italian territory or when using an Italian-registered aircraft. Each passenger is taxed on every leg of their flight. For up to 932 miles (approximately 1500 km), the tax is 100 euros per passenger. For legs higher than 932 miles (1500 km), the tax is 200 euros per passenger.

    Crew Over Nights

    Crew overnight and per diem fees are between $200 and $400 per crew member per night to cover food, lodging, and other expenses related to being away from home.

    Short Leg fees

    Short-leg fees generally apply to larger aircraft categories and are set by the aircraft owner for flights under a specified duration. The industry standard for short leg fees varies by jet category: 2 hours for Super Midsize Jets and Large Jets, 2.5 hours for Ultra-Long-Range Jets, and 3 hours for VIP Airliners. 

    Aircraft Positioning Cost

    Aircraft positioning fees are based on the amount of flight time accumulated to position the aircraft to pick up passengers and for the aircraft to fly back to its home base.

    Hangar Fees

    Hangar fees are most commonly incurred in icy conditions to prevent ice, snow, or frost from accumulating on aircraft surfaces and to avoid deicing costs. Based on the size of the aircraft, hangar fees can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,500 per day.

    Fuel Surcharge

    A fuel surcharge is applicable when there is a surge in fuel prices in the market. Fuel surcharges can add $600 to $900 per hour or more depending on the size of the aircraft. Paramount Business Jets rental prices are inclusive of fuel surcharges unless specified otherwise.

    Aircraft Daily Minimums

    Operators require a certain amount of minimum hour charge per day depending on the aircraft size. For example, for turboprops the daily minimums are 1.5 hours, for light and midsize it's 2.0 hours and for super midsize, large, and ultra-long range, the daily minimums are 2.5 hours. 

    Landing Fees

    Landing fees are charged by the airport authority to maintain the facility and the expenses vary by airport. Landing fees typically range from $150 to $500, varying based on the aircraft's size and weight. 

    Ramp and Handling

    Ramp and handling fees are anywhere from $100 to $500 per visit, charged by the fixed-base operator to handle and park the aircraft. These fees are sometimes waived if a minimum amount of fuel is purchased.

    Wi-Fi Charges

    Wi-Fi fees range from $3.00 to $8.50 per megabyte depending on the region. Wi-Fi usage on a private flight from Europe to the USA can cost from $3,000 to $6,000. A private jet charter broker can arrange for an aircraft that offers free Wi-Fi.

    Pet Cleaning Fees

    Cleaning fees are sometimes charged when a mishap occurs, requiring deep cleaning and carpet shampooing. Generally speaking, a standard carpet shampoo can cost $250 to $500 or more.

    Deicing Charges

    Whenever snow, ice, or even frost accumulates on aircraft surfaces, deicing is necessary. It is charged per application. Deicing can cost from $1,500 for smaller aircraft to $10,000 or more for larger aircraft.

How is the Hourly Rental Rate of a Jet Determined?

The hourly jet rental rates cover the charges of owning and operating the aircraft. The hourly rate is a combination of the fixed and variable costs spread over the expected total hours of usage per year.

However, a round-trip flight in South America using the same Challenger 601 with a typical passenger capacity of 9, flying from Sao Paulo to Caracas with an overnight stay will cost around $82,500. A flight time of 5 hours and 59 minutes on the outbound leg and 5 hours and 41 minutes of flight time on the return leg equals a total flight time of 11 hours and 41 minutes. When you take an hourly cost, such as $633, per passenger and multiply it by 9 passengers, it comes to $5,697 per flying hour, multiplied by 10 hours, which equals to $56,970 in the United States.     The average fuel stop takes 45–60 minutes. To speed up fuel stops, the operator or pilots may call ahead so a fuel truck is waiting for the aircraft on arrival. For smaller jets, a fuel stop can take as little as 30 minutes.

  • Do private jets come with flight attendants?

    In the United States, large jets and above are required to have flight attendants onboard; in Europe, flight attendants are used on midsize jets and above. Flight attendants require their own seat. Larger jets and above have a jump seat near the cockpit for the flight attendant to use, meaning the attendant generally stays out of the cabin.

    Passengers on all international private rental flights will have to stop at customs. In certain countries, you may have to go through customs at a specific port of entry; for example, you must stop in Tahiti to perform customs checks en route to Bora Bora.   • Is the age of an aircraft a safety factor?

    Aircraft age is not a safety factor. However, if the aircraft is older and hasn’t been refurbished properly, it may cause flyers some inconvenience such as overheating, faulty air conditioning, or faulty plumbing in the lavatory.

  • Do private jets come with Wi-Fi?

    Many private jets do have Wi-Fi, and it’s increasingly available free of charge on U.S. domestic flights. On international flights, prices range from $3.00-$8.50 USD per megabyte used.
