Aircraft Costs & Pricing Factors
Billable Flight Time
Billable flight time, calculated on an hourly basis, is the primary cost driver when renting a private jet. It includes positioning time, airborne time, and the standard two hours per day minimum charge, when applicable. Billable flight time refers to wheels up to wheels down and does not include taxi time.
Aircraft Category
Aircraft categories classify private jets based on their size and capabilities. The cost of hiring a private jet increases with its category. Private jet rental rates start at $2,000 per hour for Turbo Props, reach up to $14,000 for Ultra-Long-Range Jets, and exceed $23,000 for VIP Airliners.
Aircraft Type
There are a variety of aircraft types within each category of private jets. Some aircraft types are slightly more expensive than others based on their comfort level, performance, and market demand. You can expect price variations from $200 to $2,000 per hour or more.
Age of Aircraft
The hourly rental rate of a newer aircraft is higher per hour than an older plane. Prices can vary from $100 to $1,000 per hour or more.

Other Expenses, Costs & Fees
Crew Over Nights
Crew overnight and per diem fees are between $200 and $400 per crew member per night to cover food, lodging, and other expenses related to being away from home.
Short Leg fees
Short-leg fees generally apply to larger aircraft categories and are set by the aircraft owner for flights under a specified duration. The industry standard for short leg fees varies by jet category: 2 hours for Super Midsize Jets and Large Jets, 2.5 hours for Ultra-Long-Range Jets, and 3 hours for VIP Airliners.
Aircraft Positioning Cost
Aircraft positioning fees are based on the amount of flight time accumulated to position the aircraft to pick up passengers and for the aircraft to fly back to its home base.
Hangar Fees
Hangar fees are most commonly incurred in icy conditions to prevent ice, snow, or frost from accumulating on aircraft surfaces and to avoid deicing costs. Based on the size of the aircraft, hangar fees can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,500 per day.
Fuel Surcharge
A fuel surcharge is applicable when there is a surge in fuel prices in the market. Fuel surcharges can add $600 to $900 per hour or more depending on the size of the aircraft. Paramount Business Jets rental prices are inclusive of fuel surcharges unless specified otherwise.
Aircraft Daily Minimums
Operators require a certain amount of minimum hour charge per day depending on the aircraft size. For example, for turboprops the daily minimums are 1.5 hours, for light and midsize it's 2.0 hours and for super midsize, large, and ultra-long range, the daily minimums are 2.5 hours.
Landing Fees
Landing fees are charged by the airport authority to maintain the facility and the expenses vary by airport. Landing fees typically range from $150 to $500, varying based on the aircraft's size and weight.
Ramp and Handling
Ramp and handling fees are anywhere from $100 to $500 per visit, charged by the fixed-base operator to handle and park the aircraft. These fees are sometimes waived if a minimum amount of fuel is purchased.
-
Incidental Charges (not included in your main bill)
Wi-Fi Charges
Wi-Fi fees range from $3.00 to $8.50 per megabyte depending on the region. Wi-Fi usage on a private flight from Europe to the USA can cost from $3,000 to $6,000. A private jet charter broker can arrange for an aircraft that offers free Wi-Fi.
Pet Cleaning Fees
Cleaning fees are sometimes charged when a mishap occurs, requiring deep cleaning and carpet shampooing. Generally speaking, a standard carpet shampoo can cost $250 to $500 or more.
Deicing Charges
Whenever snow, ice, or even frost accumulates on aircraft surfaces, deicing is necessary. It is charged per application. Deicing can cost from $1,500 for smaller aircraft to $10,000 or more for larger aircraft.
-
Optional Additional Expenses

How to Calculate the Private Jet Rental Cost?
Here is the breakdown and explanation of charges and fees of a domestic round-trip private jet rental. Essentially, this is a time, speed, and distance calculation. Review the three scenarios below for more information.
-
Scenario 1: Minneapolis to Phoenix - Sample Fees
A sample route of a round trip between Minneapolis and Phoenix
Here is a line-by-line breakdown of charges that make up the total private jet rental cost of a common private jet flight. The tax rates used are 2024 tax rates.
Trip Type Round Trip PAX 4 Passengers Route Minneapolis, MN to Phoenix, AZ Duration of Trip 3 days, 2 nights Departure Airport KMSP – St. Paul International Airport Destination Airport KPHX – Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Total Distance 2,552 miles Aircraft Size Midsize Jet Hourly Rate $3,750/hour Average Speed 400 mph Billable Flight Time 7.4 hours (includes 30 min each leg for take-off and taxi) Flight Cost $27,750.00 Crew Overnight Cost * $1,500.00 Landing Fees $1000.00 Subtotal $30,250.00 Federal Excise Tax $2,268.75 Segment Fees $40 Total Cost $32,559.75 The total distance for this trip is 2,552 (one-way - 1,276 miles x 2) divided by the average speed of 400 mph equals a total flight time of 6.4 hours plus 30 minutes (15 minutes for take-off and 15 minutes for taxi) times 2 equals billable time of 7.4 hours.
The flight time of 7.4 hours multiplied by the hourly rate of $3,750 equals a total of $27,750.
Average overnight costs and per diem for the crew are $750 per night for a 2-person crew totaling $1,500.
Flight time minimums of 6 hours (3 days × 2 hours = 6 hours) have been exceeded for this itinerary and do not come into the calculation of the rental price.
The flight cost of $27,750 plus the crew cost of $1,500 and $1,000 gives us a subtotal of $30,250.
Segment Fees are $5.00 per passenger, per flight leg, times 4 passengers equals $40.00.
Adding in the 7.5% FET and segment fees amounts to a total all-inclusive rental price of $32,554.75

How Much Do Private Jets of Different Sizes Cost?
Private jet rental prices are influenced by several factors, but aircraft size, range, and passenger capacity are key. Typically, the larger the private jet, the greater the range, seating, baggage space — and the higher the hourly rental rate.
Private jet rental costs also vary based on the type, age, and performance of the aircraft. Choosing the right private jet helps balance cost, comfort, and travel time, ensuring you get the best value for your private flight.
When choosing an aircraft size, consider which aircraft has the range to fly to your destination without fuel stops. A smaller aircraft requiring a fuel stop will have a lower hourly rate, but fuel stops increase travel time and additional costs, not always resulting in the savings you were expecting.
-
How Much Does it Cost to Rent a Turboprop?
Turboprops, powered by turbine propeller engines, seat 6 to 8 passengers and have an average cabin height of 4.8 feet. With a range of 3 to 4 hours, these aircraft are best for short trips under 1,000 miles and airports with shorter runways.
A Turboprop flight from NY to Washington DC in a 2008 King Air C90 GTI with 6 passengers would take 1 hour and 12 minutes and cost around $5,760. Similarly, a flight from West Palm Beach to Miami in a 2017 Cessna Grand Caravan with 8 passengers will take 36 minutes and will cost around $4,440.

How is the Hourly Rental Rate of a Jet Determined?
The hourly cost to rent a private jet is based on the total cost of owning and operating the aircraft, divided by the number of hours the jet is expected to fly each year. It’s a mix of fixed and variable expenses.
Fixed costs include things like:
Pilot and crew salaries, training, and benefits
Aircraft insurance
Hangar (storage) fees
Regular refurbishments
Variable costs depend on how much the aircraft flies and include:
Fuel and oil
Maintenance and repairs
Crew fees (if paid hourly)
In short, the more an aircraft flies, the lower the cost per hour becomes. For example, if a jet costs $2 million a year to operate:
At 200 flight hours, the hourly cost is around $10,000.
At 400 flight hours, the hourly cost drops to about $5,000.
This is why factors like expected yearly usage and minimum daily flight times play a major role in determining private jet rental rates.

-

How do private jet rental costs compare to commercial flight prices?
Private jet rentals are typically about five times more expensive than commercial flights on a per-passenger basis. However, the added cost is often justified by the convenience, time savings, flexibility, privacy, and luxury that private jet travel provides.
For example, a commercial flight from New York to Miami may cost around $400 per passenger, while the same trip on a light jet (6 passengers) could be approximately $2,333 per passenger.
To explore pricing for your specific trip, get a quick quote online and compare various routes and aircraft options.
-
Do private jet rental costs vary based on departure or arrival times?
Private jet rental costs typically remain consistent throughout the day, but operational expenses and airport fees can vary. Some airports charge higher landing fees during peak hours or overnight parking fees. In remote locations, after-hours landings may incur additional charges if the airport is closed and must accommodate your flight.
-
Can I reschedule or get a refund for my private jet rental if my plans change?
Refund and rescheduling policies vary by private jet operator. At Paramount Business Jets, we do our best to minimize change or cancellation fees for our clients. However, most operators enforce charges once a trip enters the cancellation period outlined in the rental agreement.
Typical cancellation policies:
- 50% cancellation fee within two weeks of departure
- 100% cancellation fee within three days of departure
- One-way and empty-leg flights are non-refundable upon booking
Flight changes are only possible if the operator has availability without affecting another client’s scheduled trip. Some changes may still result in cancellation fees.
To understand the cancellation terms specific to your flight, please check with your Paramount Aviation Advisor before finalizing your booking.
-
Is travel insurance included in my private jet rental if I can't travel due to illness?
Travel insurance is not available for private jet rentals as an industry standard, and Paramount Business Jets does not offer travel insurance. Standard cancellation policies apply, as set by the aircraft operators.
We always advocate for our clients and negotiate on your behalf. Due to our strong relationships with operators, we may sometimes secure flexibility or exceptions, but refunds or reschedules are not guaranteed.
Operators plan schedules around existing trips, meaning they may still need to fly the booked route to accommodate their next flight. When this isn't the case, they may be more lenient.
We recommend reviewing cancellation terms before booking to fully understand potential costs in the event of a schedule change.
-
How Does Renting a Private Jet Compare to the Cost of Ownership?
Yes, renting a private jet is typically far more cost-effective than ownership unless you fly 400+ hours per year.
Private Jet Ownership Costs:
- Purchase Price: $3M–$90M+
- Fixed Annual Costs: Maintenance, insurance, hangar fees, and crew salaries can total millions per year
- Operational Expenses: Fuel, landing fees, and regulatory compliance add up significantly
Why Renting Makes Sense:
- Pay Only When You Fly – No ongoing maintenance or ownership costs
- Access a Variety of Aircraft – Choose the best jet for each trip
- No Depreciation or Management Hassle – Avoid asset depreciation and operational responsibilities
For most travelers, chartering provides the luxury of private aviation without the financial burden of ownership.
-
Can I modify my itinerary after booking a private jet rental, and are there any fees?
Itinerary changes after booking a private jet rental may be possible but could incur additional fees, depending on the timing and nature of the modification. To explore available options and potential costs, we recommend notifying us as early as possible.
-
What happens if my private jet rental is delayed or canceled, and will the price change if a different aircraft is used?
If your private jet rental is delayed or canceled, we will first work with the existing operator to reschedule or secure an alternative aircraft without incurring additional costs. If they cannot accommodate you, we will immediately explore other options to ensure a seamless journey. We strive to source an aircraft of the same size at no additional cost, but if a different aircraft is required, we will present the options for your approval before proceeding.
-
Is ground transportation to and from the airport included in private jet rental costs?
Private jet rental costs typically do not include ground transportation unless you are a Paramount Jet Card Member, which provides concierge credit per trip. For on-demand private jet charters, we can arrange ground transportation as an additional service, ensuring a seamless door-to-door experience. All charges are presented for your approval before being incurred.
-
Will my private jet rental cost increase if I bring a pet?
Bringing a pet on your private jet may incur additional costs, such as pet cleaning fees, which typically range from $250 to $500, depending on the operator. To ensure a smooth experience, please inform your Paramount Aviation Advisor at the time of booking so we can make the necessary arrangements.

The cost of a private jet carbon offset is relatively low compared to the overall flight cost. For example, a one-way light jet flight from Teterboro, NJ to Fort Lauderdale, FL costs approximately $14,000 and generates around 9,374 pounds of CO2.
Using TerraPass, one of the four carbon offset organizations we recommend, the cost is $7.99 per 1,000 pounds of CO2, totaling just $74.90 to offset this flight—around 0.06% of the total flight cost.
