The Village of Indian Hill City Overview
The Village of Indian Hill, a beautiful 20-square-mile piece of wooded land and winding streams, is located where the Ohio and Little Miami rivers meet, about 14 miles northeast of Cincinnati. Long before there was the Village of Indian Hill, a rural farming community turned wealthy suburb, there was just Indian Hill, the hunting and fishing ground of the Shawnee, Miami and Delaware Indian tribes. Many streets in the city follow the same paths the Indian trails did.
When the settlers came after the Revolutionary War, the Indians were driven out and the area became a farming community. In the early 1900s, wealthy Cincinnatians began buying up the farmhouses to be used as weekend retreats or their “houses in the country.”
The Village of Indian Hill and the greater Cincinnati area is called the crossroads of the U.S. -- where the industrial North meets the rural South and East meets West.
Today, it is the richest city in Ohio and one of the richest cities in the United States. The population of the Village of Indian Hill is about 5,800. The median household income is $216,000 and the median home value is $1 million. Proctor and Gamble are headquartered there.
Keeping its rural feeling and its immense green space has always been important to the residents of the Village of Indian Hills. The town has a Green Areas Program that seeks sponsorships and donations to help maintain the sea of greenery that envelopes the Village and keeps the hill from eroding. In 1926, prominent residents Stanley and Dorothy Snowden founded Indian Hill’s Rowe Arboretum and began collecting trees and shrubs to reforest this ridge that was previously cleared for farming and pasture by early settlers. Since then, tens of thousands of trees have been planted, many donated as seedlings by Ohio’s agricultural department and the U.S. Department of Forestry.
Perhaps the most famous resident of the Village of Indian Hill was the late Marge Schott, the controversial owner of the Cincinnati Reds. Schott, who died in 2004, lived in a 12,000 square foot mansion built in 1929 called Ambleside.
