Vaclav Havel Airport Prague history

Before being renamed Václav Havel Airport Prague in 2012, the main international airport in Prague was known as Prague Ruzyne International Airport. An international airport for private jets and scheduled airlines, Václav Havel Airport Prague is an important hub for Eastern – and Central -- Europe.

Shortly after President Václav Havel’s death in 2011, an online campaign was launched – with Slovak film director Fero Fenic at the helm – to rename the airport after him. Fenic’s campaign urged the government and Parliament to honor the country’s hero. It was ceremoniously renamed on Oct. 5, 2012, which would have been Havel’s 76th birthday.

Václav Havel served as the last president of Czechoslovakia, from 1989 until dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1992. He then served as the first president of the Czech Republic from its inception in 1993 until 2003. Havel, a dissident playwright who led the bloodless “Velvet Revolution” that brought an end to Soviet rule over Czechoslovakia, died after a long illness that began with operations for lung cancer in the late 1990s.

The airport was originally opened in 1937 after five years of construction. In the early 1940s, during World War II, the airport was taken over by the Nazis, which took over all of its planes for the war. The airport’s hangars were used to repair military aircraft.

After the liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945, civilian air traffic was restored at the airport.
