Opa locka Airport history
First he built the city; then he built the airport.
Glenn Curtiss, aviation enthusiast and one of the founders of the U.S. aircraft industry, was born in 1878.
After his family moved to Florida in the 1920s, Curtiss founded 18 corporations, served on civic commissions – and developed or helped develop the Miami suburbs of Hialeah, Opa locka and Miami Springs, where he built his family home that has been refurbished and opened as a museum in his honor.
Opa locka is an abbreviation of a Seminole Indian word, Opa-tisha-wocka-locka, which means “wooded hammock in a swamp.” (Curtiss shortened the name to “Opa locka” in 1921, according to the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization.)
He said he wanted the city to be as beautiful as Coral Gables so he built more than 100 Moorish style buildings with domes, minarets and outdoor staircases during the Florida land boom of the late 1920s. He named the streets after characters from the Arabian Nights, such as Ali Baba and Aladdin. Opa locka had its own airport, zoo and golf course.
Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport and the area surrounding were part of many famous – and infamous – historical events.
Amelia Earhart started her ill-fated trip around the world in 1937 at Miami Municipal Airport, just south of Opa locka.
The German dirigible “Graf Zeppelin” stopped at the Naval Air Station Miami (which later became Opa locka Airport) on its Germany-Brazil-United States-Germany route. And, the U.S. Navy Dirigible “Akron” crashed in a thunderstorm in 1933 after leaving Opa locka.
In the Cold War era, according to Miami International Airport’s archives, Opa locka Airport played a part in both military and civilian efforts, including the infamous “Black Flights” to Guatemala in the 1950s; the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early 1960s.
The airport served as a Navy and Marine air station during the Korean War.
Curtiss had given the airport to the Navy shortly before he died in 1930. In 1962, the deed for the airport was transferred to Miami-Dade County but it remains a military presence with its busy Coast Guard Air Station.
