That’s a big plus for those who charter private jets into Heathrow to go on to faraway destination or come from faraway places and want to hire a private jet out of Heathrow.

Many elite travelers come to London on private jets to do business at the city’s two major financial centers, the Royal Docks and Canary Wharf. Others come to see the sites or sporting events or get a glimpse of the royal family.

Heathrow, often called the hub of the aviation world, is 14 miles west of the center of London.

Heathrow is expanding

Heathrow, with some 78 million passengers a year, is Europe’s busiest airport and the seventh busiest airport in the world. (The busiest is Atlanta International with 104 million passengers a year, followed by Beijing Capital International Airport, Dubai International, Tokyo Haneda Airport, Los Angeles and Chicago O’Hare.)

However, Heathrow is about as big as it can get because of its current capacity restraints. The importance of expanding becomes even more crucial as other European airports also reach their maximum capacity.

In the summer of 2018, Parliament, in a landmark vote, approved support for Heathrow expansion, which has been discussed for over a decade.

Discussion began in January 2019 about the planned expansion – from two to three runways – with requests for input from the public on changes that would help shape the airport’s future. The public has been asked to weigh in on:

  • Airspace change for the existing two runways and the addition of a third
  • Managing noise at an expanded Heathrow
  • Managing Heathrow's growth within environmental limits
  • Directional preference
  • Night flights, early morning arrivals and other night restrictions

London Heathrow, as it exists today, is at 98 percent capacity with flight movements capped at 480,000 a year.

With the expansion and the addition of a third runway and a sixth terminal, Heathrow could become the busiest airport in the world with the ability to handle 130 million passengers – 740,000 flight movements – a year.

Construction is set to begin on the $18 billion project in 2021. It is expected to create 180,000 jobs and $270 billion in economic benefits to the United Kingdom.

London Heathrow history

Heathrow Airport, which opened as a small airfield in 1929, gets its name from the small hamlet of Heathrow in which it is located. When it was built, it was situated amidst farmland and orchards.

It was being enlarged to be used by the military during World War II but the war ended before it was completed.

The government continued its expansion as a civil airport. London Airport opened in 1946. It was renamed Heathrow in 1966.

Today, it is one of the busiest airports in the world with five terminals, two runways and flights to more than 180 cities in 85 countries. And, half of the 78 million passengers that go through Heathrow each year are on long-haul flights.
