History of Brussels National
Brussels National Airport was built by German forces who took over more than 1,000 acres of fields in 1940 during World War II. The airport was named Melsbroek, the city in which it was located.
The British took over the airport in 1944 and gave it back to Belgium.
A new terminal was built in 1948 and Melsbroek became the national airport of Brussels.
In 1956, the Belgian government built a new airport using the existing runways. The airport buildings were built in Zaventem, which is why the airport is sometimes called Zaventem Airport.
The airport continued to expand and modernize and, in 2005, was awarded the “Best Airport in Europe” designation by the International Air Transport Association.
Charter a private jet to watch the Tour de France
Many bicyclist enthusiasts will charter private jets into Brussels for the Tour de France in July 2019 because the city has been given the honor as the city of the Grand Départ, the start of the race.
However, bike racing fans find Brussels a convenient spot to land to see the race every year.
The race will begin in Brussels for its first leg, a 119-mile sprint to the Royal Palace. After that, it’s on to The Atomium, a museum in Brussels built in 1958 for the World's Fair. Then, it’s 70 miles to Binche before crossing over the border into France.
The route of the Tour de France changes every year but much of the race stays the same. Bikers always go through the passages through the Pyrenees and the Alps and always finish on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
The Grand Départ is particularly prestigious and has only started outside of France 23 times.
Most stages of the race are in mainland France, although since the mid-1950s it has become common to go through nearby countries.
After the Tour de France race itself there are criteria, or short races, in the Netherlands and Belgium where the public can see their heroes of the race.
