More about the Jetstream J61

The Jetstream 61 began production in 1986, which was essentially a stretched version of the BAE 748. While the Jetstream 61 may have look like a longer version of the BAE 748, the aircraft from nose to tail underwent extensive improvements to its aerodynamics profile, flight deck, and cabin. The aircraft experienced limited production due to the J 61 being a direct competitor of the successful ATR-72, as both BAE and ATR were members of the same manufacturing consortium. Ultimately there were a total of 67 were built between 1986 and 1993, with 50 that are still currently in service.

Key Features of the Jetstream J61

The J61 possessed may of the design features of both the BAE 748 and the J 41. While the majority of the exterior improvements were attributed to the BAE 748, the majority of the design features with respect to the cabin came from the J 41. As one of the largest regional turboprops in service today with a total seating capacity of 70 passengers, the J61 offers a spacious cabin with 4 abreast seating and built in arm rests for window seat passengers, a throwback to the J41.

Capabilities of the Jetstream J61

The J 61 was intended to be used as a high capacity regional turboprop, as such its top speed and range were rather limited. Limited to 250 knots, and 637 miles or range, what the J 61 lacked in performance, it more than made up in carrying capacity, during a time when most other turboprops were still limited to between 20-30 passengers.
