The Fokker F-70 is the successor to the F-28 Friendship with its first delivery to the Ford Motor Company as an executive jet in 1994. It was derived primarily from the Fokker F-100. Since then 47 Fokker F-70's have been produced and have been in service to airlines all over the world, but primarily in Europe. The Fokker F-70 was developed for markets that required a bigger aircraft than a turboprop but was too small for a larger aircraft such as a Boeing 737 or a MD-80.

The Fokker 70 has passenger seating that can range from 72 in a 2 class configuration or 85 passengers in an all-economy class configuration.
